Yellowstone & the Northern Rockies

12 images·Yellowstone National Park · Cooke City & Southwest Montana·Limited Edition

The Greater Yellowstone ecosystem — bison, pronghorn, elk, and fox on the northern range, the Yellowstone River carving through rhyolite canyon, and the light over Cooke City at the end of the only road kept open through winter. Wildlife, weather, and terrain in the last large intact temperate ecosystem in the northern hemisphere.

This country rewards patience more than almost anywhere I have worked. The northern range of Yellowstone holds wildlife in the open where the high country pushes animals down to elevation — bison, pronghorn, elk, and fox all working the same sage and grass within a few miles of each other. The road east through the Lamar toward Cooke City is the one stretch kept plowed year round, which is why serious wildlife photographers come here in January rather than July.

The landscape work follows the Yellowstone River: the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where hydrothermal alteration turned the rhyolite walls yellow and ochre, and the broader canyon further north where the river bends through bleached rock toward Gardiner and the Montana line.

These are large-format images made for large walls — the kind of rooms found in mountain homes throughout the Gallatin and Madison valleys. I work with private collectors, interior designers, and art consultants placing work in Montana residences and hospitality properties. Prints ship anywhere; consultations for Bozeman and Big Sky area installations can be handled in person.
